Don’t expect to see Fallout 5 anytime soon, as studio head Todd Howard has confirmed that the next main entry in Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic RPG series is years away.
Following the Starfield reveal on Xbox and Bethesda Showcase, Howard sat down with IGN (opens in new tab) to discuss the sci-fi RPG, as well as other projects Bethesda had in the works. He confirmed that the studio is planning to develop Fallout 5, but it won’t be hitting shelves anytime soon.
“Yeah, Elder Scrolls 6 is in pre-production and we’re going to do Fallout 5 after that, so our list is pretty full in a while,” Howard told IGN. “We have a few other projects that we look at from time to time as well.”
With The Elder Scrolls 6 ahead, Fallout 5 has plenty of time to wait before going into full development. Bethesda tends to take several years to create its single-player RPGs. Starfield was officially announced in 2018, before finally getting a proper reveal at E3 2021 and being pushed back to a 2023 release.
Likewise, The Elder Scrolls 6 came out in 2018 but has yet to make another appearance. We also have little idea what these “other projects” Howard is referring to could be, how big they will become, or whether they will reach the public’s hands.
For now, fans of the studio’s post-apocalyptic RPG will have to make do with 2018’s Fallout 76. We weren’t too keen on the multiplayer spin-off when it first launched, but Bethesda kept releasing updates, announcing The Pitt expansion in their recent Summer Game Fest showcase.
We expect the Fallout series to resurface sometime before its distant fifth installment. As one of the most acclaimed and recognized brands in contemporary gaming, Bethesda will likely be interested in extracting as much juice as possible, even if it’s just through another spin-off game.
It’s tempting to think that if Bethesda can’t spare the resources to develop a new Fallout game, it would outsource the project to another developer. Obsidian received the fallout license in 2008, while Bethesda was busy working on Skyrim, and released the highly acclaimed Fallout: New Vegas in 2010.
But Howard had already hinted that it probably won’t happen again. He sees Fallout as a Bethesda hallmark, and hinted that the studio already has an idea of what a fifth entry in the series would look like.
“Fallout is really part of our DNA here,” he said. IGN (opens in new tab) in November last year. “We work with other people from time to time – I can’t say what will happen. You know, we have a page about Fallout 5, what we want to do.”
This page will likely amount to a pitch or broad concept design and does not indicate that any substantial work has been done on the game. What Howard’s comments do reveal, however, is that when the next Fallout game finally comes out, it’ll likely be heading out the doors of Bethesda.
